End of Christmastide with a prayer from India

For more than twenty-five years I have known Savithri Devanesen, founder and sustainer of Roofs for the Roofless in Kilpauk, Chennai India and every year she has sent a Christmas poem a practice she took over from her husband Chandran who died in 1973. Her prayers often travel (by post, never email) slowly and arrive at such a time that I can feel the sweet closure of Christmastide in her words. Savithri has come to a great age now but her heart is as full of love as it has ever been.

Savithri Devanesen, Christmas, 2015Savithri

Lord,
this Christmas
help us to light lamps
of love and service
in our hearts,
and to find meaning in life
by rededicating
our lives,
our hopes,
ourselves
to the service of God
and humanity.
